Real Life Events
Similar to how niantic runs promotional events from time to time within the gameplay of Pokemon GO for all players to enjoy, so a number of real life events also take place periodically in certain areas of the world. Most of these Real Life Events take place at national parks in certain cities; not only must players travel to these areas of the globe to attend them, but they must also purchase an access pass for these given events in order to attend. Even though most players are unwilling to travel and spend money to go to Real Life Events, the people that do are usually awarded with special Pokemon appearing in both the Wild and as Raid Bosses in these Event Locations. (Special Contests and added benefits such as Double Stardust usually also take place at them.)
