Evolving Pokemon

Much like powering up Pokemon, evolving pokemon is also key in a player's journey within Pokemon GO. Again, similar to leveling up, evolving Pokemon comes at a price (thus why most expert players Fully Evolve their Pokemon BEFORE Leveling them). But instead of costing both Stardust and Pokemon Candy, Evolution, done by accessing a specific Pokemon's Profile, only costs a trainer that given Pokemon's Candy.

The price tag for doing so ranges anywhere from 12 to 25 to 50 to 100 to 400 Pokemon Candies, depending on the Pokemon and how many stages of evolution it has. With the 2nd Generation, a handful of Pokemon must also need a special Evolutionary Item in addition to a specific amount of Pokemon Candy in order to evolve (Onix, Scyther, Gloom, Sunkern, Poliwhirl, Slowpoke, Porygon, Seadra). In the 3rd Generation, this same trend continued with the Pokémon known as Clamperl.

But even with such a hefty cost, a trainer is still rewarded with a number of gifts for evolving a Pokemon. For one, if they evolve their Pokemon into a species that they have yet to see, that Pokemon will be added into their pokedex. A player also receives Experience for evolving a Pokemon (as well as one free Candy of that Evolution Chain): 500 XP for evolving, and an additional 500 XP if it's a new Pokedex Entry. This number can be easily be doubled by using a Lucky Egg, causing for most players nowadays to abuse this method to harvest XP.
